Q 2 S Transition

COMS faculty and staff plan to make the Q2S transition as reasonable as possible, beginning with the Major Checksheets below.

Please review the Major Checksheet that is appropriate for you, based on the University Catalogue of Entry NOT the Program Catalogue of Entry.  You will find both entry dates at the top of your DARs Report.

We have planned the following dates for Q2S Advising:

October 17-22:

During advising for winter quarter registration, seniors planning to graduate no later than the end of summer 2012 will meet with their assigned academic advisors to plan course completion for winter, spring and summer.

January  16-27:

Sophomores and Juniors will schedule an advising session with a Q2S advisor to complete a transition plan that will specify course completion and hours on the quarter system AND requirements yet to be completed under the semester system. This advising session MUST be completed before academic advising for spring quarter registration.

January 31-February 9:

Academic advising for spring quarter registration.

February 13-March 2:

Freshmen will schedule an advising session with a Q2S advisor to complete a Q2S transition plan that will specify course completion and hours on the quarter system AND requirements yet to be completed under the semester system.

Checksheets in the Major

Quarter term course numbers are included on the Fall 2010 and 2011 Year of Entry Checksheets.

The Related Area

Each COMS major must declare a "Related Area." The requirement can be met with a certificate, minor, or custom-designed "related area." Whatever option you choose, a minimum of 28 hours must be completed with 12 at the 100- and 200-level and 16 at the 300- and 400-level. The form below can be downloaded and filled-out collaboratively with your advisor.

Proposed Schedule for 2011-2012

In an effort to assist you with planning your schedule, commencing in the fall of 2011 and concluding with summer 2012, we are posting a PROPOSED schedule of classes. The schedule could change for any number of reasons and should not be considered the last word. Please always consult with your COMS advisor for changes.

If you and a faculty member have discussed completing an independent study under COMS 498, the form you need to complete is listed below. This form must be completed by you, submitted to the supervising faculty member in COMS for review, signed by both of you, then copied to the Undergraduate Director for the files.

The Minor in COMS

The Minor in Communication Studies was revised several years ago. If you are going to add the minor to your program, please be sure it is from the 2007-08 or 2008-09 catalogs and matches the information in the checksheet below. Students interested in adding the minor should go to their major college and speak to a student services staff member; majors in the School of Communication Studies cannot minor in COMS. Students minoring in COMS do not have an advisor in Communication Studies.
