Student Projects

Students majoring in the School of Communication Studies have a variety of experiences in which they are able to learn and apply knowledge of the field.  Below you will find examples of how our majors have "learned by doing" through creative assignments and activities created by our outstanding teachers.

COMS in Action

  • Spring 2012-13: Lindsey Spanner

    Lindsey Spanner is a peer advocate at the Ohio University Survivor Advocacy Program (OUSAP).

    She provides confidential advocacy to victims of sexual assault, domestic/dating violence, and stalking in Athens. OUSAP is a student organization, so hers is a volunteer position. Her responsibilities include attending to the hotline and walk-in clients for 3 hours each week, as well as developing programming to educate groups across campus.

  • Fall 2012-13: Colin Walker

    As an undergraduate scholar in Communication and Public Advocacy, Colin Walker yearned to apply the knowledge, skills and abilities he gained from COMS in service to others. In a recent study abroad trip to South Africa, he worked to understand and give a voice to South Africans suffering in the face of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Read his testimony, listen to his radio broadcast, and allow yourself to be inspired to take your education outside of the classroom.

Meaningful Places

During the Fall quarter of 2008, Dr. Roger Aden used his knowledge of connections between communication and "place" to design and offer a Capstone course (COMS 450) addressing the topic.  For the project in the course, students created a book called Ohio University: A Campus of Meaningful Places, which was then published by the university.

As you read chapters in the book, you will not only learn about some of the more special, emotional, and scary parts of Ohio University, but you will also have a chance to ponder how communication is connected to how we experience spaces in our lives. 

As Dr. Aden highlights in the preface, this project illustrates the meaningful outcomes that can occur when members of the university community--faculty, staff, administration, and students--come together in promoting the teaching and learning process.

Congratulations to Dr. Aden and students in his Fall, 2008 COMS450 course for creating such a wonderful publication, one that current students, alumni, and everyone affiliated with Ohio University will enjoy.
